Farm life in York
Friends of ours own a gorgeous farm property in York so when they invited us to visit we jumped at the opportunity.
Instructions to get to the property included a mud map and note to drive up the long driveway to the house. Being precious with TRU we took the long gravel driveway nice and slow and popped BLU in to 4wks drive mode for the final steep climb to the house.
Gosh the careful drive was worth it, the views are stunning. We planned to stay for the weekend and ended up staying almost a week the first time.
Then we looked after the farm for a week and had a glorious time pretending to be farmers.
Say hello to Marcello
Meet Marcello and you need to say it with an Italian twang to capture his BIG personality. He is the sheperd that looks after the flock of sheep and he certainly lets you know he is the boss whenever you get close to the fence.
Marcelo is the one you have to watch according to John who has been at the impact of that solid muscular alpaca neck. When feeding the sheep, either hay or grain someone has to distract or out-smart Marcelo, firstly to get in the gate safely and secondly to safely feed the flock. He is good value though and does an amazing job protecting his herd from local foxes and cheeky lawyer-types – ha!
Stormy the softie
Look at these soleful eyes and meet the loveable and adorable Stormy or Storm Boy! He is the most precious farm dog without being an actual working dog. He does his rounds of the property for sure but when you call he comes running for a cuddle – well mostly.
Stormy was obsessed with Missy during our stays. He would sit outside the caravan door waiting to get a glimpse of our little madam all the while hoping she would come out and play. Would she…never! As a typical arrogant cat she hissed and growled and arched her back at precious Stormy. She would walk slowly past him to check out the garden and whatever lurks under the house. They did touch nosed a few times which we thinks means she put up with him only if Stormy respected her boundaries, which he did!
Love this big softie who according to our hosts, Stormy continued to sit where the caravan had sat after we departed, hoping to see Missy again.
Our York family
John and Sue are two of the nicest people you will meet and we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them, learning about their farm and their life on it.
We will never forget the many drinks we consumed on our first night there and the stories shared from the past five plus years combined with belly-hurting laughter since we last caught up. Gosh our heads hurt the next day but the friendship will certainly last longer.
We are grateful for the space to park TRU, the hot showers, extraordinary hospitality, lessons and time on the farm.
We look forward to our next visit.
